The Letter

To his eminence, Count Rem Dai Kun Char Li Halan, The Red Count, protector of the Garden Worlds, lord of Suffolk County, General of the 6th Mobile battalion, hero of the battle of Avaneir, defender of the faith, champion of justice and resolver of wrongs.

I humbly write to you in an effort to finally bring a resolution to a matter that was at risk of being a grave cause of schism between our great noble houses.

As you are no doubt aware, during the Emperor War, when the cursed Decados stole the world of Malignatius from it’s rightful owners, many precious treasures of your house were lost in the process.  Family heirlooms, symbols of heritage, ancient artefacts, antiques and remnants of antiquity were all either destroyed, claimed by the invaders or lost in the chaos of the conflict. I am even led to understand that amongst the missing items there were some saintly relics of uncontested provenance, truly holy to the Church and sacred to our Universal Faith. Such a loss must have been a cause of great shame, embarrassment and righteous indignation for many of the pious Li Halan.

I realise that raising such a matter of dishonour with a powerful man of integrity and exemplary reputation, such as yourself, may have led to this epistle having already been torn up and thrown into the flames of your fireplace, but I believe by reputation that you are also a man of cool intellect and stoic reason. You will have read this far seeking more details of the rationale behind my communication. The fact is a simple one; one of the lost treasures of Malignatius has fallen into my possession and I seek to return it to it’s rightful custodians.

Some years ago an item came into my possession that I considered at the time to be little more than a curious piece of artwork. Strange perhaps, but as a connoisseur of rarities and object d’art I am more than accustomed to creations of fevered geniuses and troubled creatives that may border on the bizarre and obscure. Thus the object has remained, for some decades, as little more than a footnote in my collection.  That is until recently when a fresh cataloguing of my galleries brought new eyes to glance upon the various artworks within. I am now to understand that I hold in my possession none other than the sacred Skull of Saint Diana.

As I am sure a man of your learned background is no doubt aware, the skull is a truly holy relic that was entrusted to the care of your house by the Church in the years following The Conversion of Cardano.  It’s loss must have been a great wound to the pride and honour of your line and it would now be my honour to see it borne safely back into your care.

Obviously I seek no reward for this act, for it is the right and proper thing to do. I await your response, in whatever way you see fit.

With humility, under the glorious rays of the Celestial Sun,

Baron Tochiro Matsumoto Justinian
